The HP 50g is the flagship calculator model from Hewlett Packard. It is the long-anticipated replacement for the HP 49g+, and as such is the latest member of the HP 49 calculator series. Some nice pictures of the 50g can be found in Mike Mander’s gallery.

The purpose of this wiki is to collect important bits of information and links to documentation about the 50g calculator.  The wiki will help novices to learn the ins and outs of their new calculator, and will help experienced users to find their way through the plethora of available online resources and to put their calculator to best use.

Note that although this wiki is about the 50g calculator, most of the available information applies equally well to the 49g and 49g+ calculators.

In case you have never heard of the 50g... it is a multi-purpose calculator that is aimed at the mathematical, engineering, and scientific communities. It comes loaded with over 2000 functions, it is completely customizable, and fully programmable.  There are thousands of high quality programs for the 50g available on the web and thanks to the 2G byte SD card slot you can store most of them on your calculator if you want to.

Once you start to understand how the calculator works, you will not only get the edge on your homework/work, but you will also get to touch on some of the core ideas of computer programming and problem solving in a methodical and stuctured way.

The calculator is also fun with a small collection of fun games for the ride home.

Have fun, it's not hard work, and it keeps your mind active and free from that deadly fuzziness.

The comp.sys.hp48 newsgroup is the place where many seasoned HP 48/49 series calculator users hang out, and so is an excellent source of information about the 50g. Another premier web resource is Eric Rechlin’s hpcalc.org site, which provides a wealth of software and information for the 48 and 49 series calculators.
