If you're a student

Ok, so your thinking of getting a new calculator and you are thinking, what would I like, or more precisely will it fit my needs?

There are many considerations that you need to take into account when considering a new calculator like the 50g (and others.) For students, first on my list would be "can I use this in examinations?"

Here are a few things you need to consider

  • The IR port, some teachers fear that it can be used (like mobiles) to transmit answers, black insulation tape over the port prevents this.
  • Is it ok to use Computer Algebra System (CAS)
  • Some institutions state that you cannot use a calculator with a qwerty keyboard (your fine here)
  • Sound, beeps are annoying in exams

The situation we are trying to avoid here is that you are not stuck, not being able to use the calculator that you have become so familiar with when you need it most. Add to that trying to remember how to do stuff "the old" way, things you don't need in an exam!

What does the 50g offer for you?

HP product overview, lets face it, the hp50g is not just a calculator. It is more so a pocket computer. All of that power does come at a cost, mainly the learning curve. It does take a considerable effort on your part to come to terms with the 50g. But once mastered, the rewards are ten fold. There are however people you can ask, see resources.
